Sustainable innovation: how Empro breaks down odour with a biofilter
How a root wood biofilter uses natural microorganisms to break down odour particles and keep our air clean.
At Empro, we are fully committed to sustainable and innovative techniques to minimise odour nuisance from our production process.
One of the methods we use is a biofilter based on root wood. This natural filter plays an essential role in the ecological breakdown of odour particles and contributes to cleaner air.
How does our biofilter work?
Our biofilter purifies the air by passing it through a filter bed of root wood. This wood is covered with a thin water film in which microorganisms are active. When odorous substances such as ammonia and aldehydes come into contact with the filter, they are captured and broken down by these microorganisms. This process is entirely biological and ensures that the purified air is released into the environment without any nuisance odour.
At Empro, we ensure that the microbiome in the biofilter continues to function optimally. Crucial parameters such as temperature, pH, humidity and odour concentration are continuously monitored and adjusted where necessary. This guarantees consistent and efficient operation.
Ecological benefits of this technique
- 100% natural process — No chemical neutralisation, only biological breakdown.
- Renewable and circular — The root wood used is composted over time.
- Low ecological footprint — This system works energy-efficiently and contributes to carbon sequestration.
Sustainability and innovation at Empro

Sustainability is a core value at Empro. That is why we employ multiple innovative techniques to neutralise the odour from our production process, always with respect for people and the environment. Our root wood biofilter is just one of the many solutions we use to strive for a sustainable production environment.
Preventive maintenance of the biofilter
To ensure the optimal functioning of our biofilter, we replace the root wood annually. This preventive maintenance will take place over the next three days (18/2 to 20/2). During this period, production will not be active and we expect no odour impact. Upon restart, the air may temporarily have a slightly different odour, but this is normal and of short duration. In addition, the filter's performance is continuously monitored, both internally and by external bodies.
With this approach, we ensure that our biofilter continues to do its job in the long term and that we continue to break down odour in a natural and ecologically responsible way.
